A Funny Little Fact
The very first guests who booked Mähbergstüberl without personally knowing Iris and René had already been visiting the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena for many years. They were simply looking for a new place to stay during their holiday.
We have now been open for less than three years, and they have already visited us ten times. In fact, stays number 11 and 12 are already planned. Their family has also found its way to Mähbergstüberl and has been happily returning ever since.
We honestly couldn't wish for a greater compliment.

Holiday Photos Straight from Our Guest Album
The most beautiful photos are not taken by us, but by our guests. During their stay at Mähbergstüberl, they capture memories of the mountains, the lakes, special moments with family and friends, and of course our famous flower wreath. Over the years, taking a photo in the wreath has become a real tradition for many guests. In summer, it is filled with colourful flowers, while in winter it is transformed into a charming winter wreath. It's no surprise that it is often called the best selfie spot in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena!
By now, the wreath has become much more than just a photo spot. It has even been used for a gender reveal!
And for the romantics among us, the Bichlbach waterfall has also become a favourite location. Several marriage proposals have already taken place there.
Who knows what your most memorable holiday photo will be...

Who Are René & Iris?
We are René ('67) and Iris ('69), the owners of Mähbergstüberl, born and raised in Rotterdam. We met in February 1989. We have now been together for more than 37 years and have been married since 1993.
Just four weeks after we met, we went on a skiing holiday together to Bichlbach. For René, this was something special. As a professional windsurfer, he travelled all over the world for competitions and had never really been interested in winter sports. But going to Austria with Iris? He didn't have to think twice about it.

Since 2022, we, René and Iris, have proudly been the owners of Mähbergstüberl in Bichlbach.
Together with our two Bernese Mountain Dogs, Millie and Marley, we welcome guests from both home and abroad for a relaxing holiday in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena. But how did two people from Rotterdam end up in a small mountain village in Austria?
That story begins more than 35 years ago...

in 2015 waren wij zelf nog
te gast bij de Mähbergstüberl!
For Iris, it felt like coming home. As a young girl, she had already been coming to Bichlbach for skiing holidays.
She spent her holidays on the ski slopes, hung out with the local youngsters, and regularly enjoyed a toastie at Mähbergstüberl. Without realising it, a small seed was planted there for a dream that would come true many years later.
René also immediately lost his heart to the village, the mountains, and the people during that very first holiday.
Bichlbach remained a regular destination for our family for many years.
Together, we had two children: Chalyssa (1995) and Nick (1999). In winter, we spent our days on the ski slopes, and in summer, we returned for the peace, nature, and cosy atmosphere.
The dream of emigrating to Austria had been with us for a very long time. When our children were still young, we even tried to make that move once before. In the end, it fell through at the last moment, and so, for the time being, it remained just a dream.
In the Netherlands, a new adventure came our way. We had the opportunity to take over the café where René was working.
What started as a cosy neighbourhood pub grew into one of the largest darts cafés in the Netherlands. After relocating to the characteristic Rotterdam North railway station building, we continued to build and grow our business. At the same time, Iris worked with great passion as a real estate agent, a profession that had always been close to her heart.
For many years, we combined hard work with our holidays in Austria. Then came COVID. As it was for many entrepreneurs, it was a difficult period. The business survived, but the many years of entrepreneurship and long working days were beginning to take their toll.
In the meantime, we always made the same joke: "If Mähbergstüberl ever comes up for sale, we'll go for it."
And then it happened.

On the last day of our annual skiing holiday, Mähbergstüberl was put up for sale.
A few months later, we received the keys from Maria, the very same Maria from whom Iris used to buy toasties as a teenager after a morning on the slopes.
It felt as though everything had fallen into place. Together with our two Bernese Mountain Dogs, we moved to Austria.
Today, we are proud to welcome guests to a place that has played a special role in our lives for many years. A place where memories have been made, dreams have come true, and where we can create new memories together with our guests.
Curious about our full emigration story? On our YouTube channel, we have documented everything, from the very first plans to our life in Austria today. There, we share weekly vlogs about our adventure in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena.
